I thought I had checked this, put apparently there were some old in-tree zlib.h/zconf.h headers lying around somewhere that caused wrong headers to be included :( So after clean untar of zlib and hwpfilter dirs, and then dmaking them, it seems that the --with-system-zlib should work out-of-the-box with MacOSX build.
