But right-clicking works perfectly, calling contextual menu for selected objebt (without deselecting). Your example fails because there is no "white" rectangle in your file. What you have is an _empty_ rectagle. Makes complete sense that if you click in empty space you select nothing. Please, select the rectangle, make it solid color and put color "white". Looks the same, but now you can click anywhere inside to select. But the circle must be in front in order to be visible if inside the rectangle. That's the diference with an empty shape. I am closing this as invalid. Please, feel free to re-open if you think there are useful use cases.
