When multiple cells of a table are merged, the resultant merged cell is as big
as the merged cells put together. This is the normal (expected) behavior.

But if those cells were themselves the result of a cell-splitting operation, the
result is strange: The merged cell shrinks in size, as shown in attached file.

Correcting this is very hard.
