There has been some discussion about this on the QA Dev list, so I decided to
try it for myself. After examining the situation, I would recommend
reclassification as a defect. The defect summary would be "pasting into all
cells in a workbook causes OOo Calc to hang." Here is my reasoning:

In Excel, I typed "asdf" in a single cell, then copied that cell to all other
cells. An hourglass appeared, then a progress dialog in the lower left corner of
the Excel sheet. The progress dialog lasted until the operation completed, which
took about 15 seconds. After 15 seconds every cell in the sheet had "asdf" in it
without too much trouble.

In Calc, I tried the same thing. I noticed the lack of a progress bar right
away, which is what the RFE would be for. BUT, what really got me was the length
of time it took to perform the paste! I decided to let Calc run until the paste
completed, which was a mistake. 15 minutes later, Calc was still running and
Windows gave me a "virtual memory low" error. At that point, I thought I had
better cancel the operation in Calc, but there was no way to cancel. So I
decided to kill Calc by clicking close... that didn't work. So I used
CTRL+ALT+DELETE. Calc didn't respond to that either. Plus, it must have kept
right on eating memory, because pretty soon Excel and Firefox, which had been
idling in the background, crashed too. At this point I just rebooted, but even
that operation took about 8 minutes to complete because of the low memory
availbility during shutdown.

So, I would say this is a defect.

Expected Behavior:
Calc should copy the contents of a single cell into the contents of the entire
worksheet within a reasonable time frame, or should cancel the operation when it
runs out of memory. Reasonable is defined here as within 1 or 2 minutes on a P4
machine w/ 512 MB RAM. (2 minutes would make Calc about 8 times slower than
Excel, but that's still reasonable.)

Actual Behavior:
Calc begins the copy operation but never completes it. Instead, it continues to
use up system memory until the entire system slows to a crawl or crashes
altogether.

Additional Notes:
Calc seems to exhibit the same behavior when copying to multiple entire columns
as well, which is a more likely scenario anyway. Also, maybe OS should be
changed to Windows? Does OOo do this on Linux/BSD/Solaris?
