Sorry, it was not possible for me to answer before.

This is a very important question, in fact, and the answer is not trivial.

In fact, we depend on Apple developments tools (Apple provides them). They are
several problems to
solve in same time :

First, we have to maintain compatible versions for both Mac OS X 10.3 and 10.4.
:

- on Mac OS X 10.3 (aka Panther) we use gcc-3.3 with XCode 1.5
- on Mac OS X 10.4 (aka Tiger) we use gcc-4.0.x for both PowerPC and Mac Intel

And when OpenOffice.org is built on Tiger, we cannot use it on Panther (
#i53847 ). That's the reason
why we decided to use Panther for official builds on Mac OS X.

If I'm not wrong, only gcc-3.3 is available currently on Mac OS X Pnahter
(10.3).

Second we have to maintain Panther build, for some time, and I think, we can
expect with all changes,
the following distribution at end 2006 :

40 to 50% using Mac Intel ( gcc-4.0 ) with the enormous effort Apple is doing.

completed with :

35% to 25% using Powerc PC/ tiger
25 % using PowerPC / Panther ( probably less )

Note : just some times ago, it was ~50 / 50 between Panther and Tiger

IMHO, we have two possibilities :

- fix asap http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=53847, and if this
is possible, we can
change the gcc version baseline for gcc-4.x (current is gcc-3.3, shipped with
XCode 1.5).

and/or

- define a deadline (somewhere in 2006) for builds using gcc-3.3, and switch
for gcc-4.0 after, as
baseline. If so, I propose to provide in the same time universal binaries built
using gcc-4.0 , +
maintainance tree for Panther only, and built using gcc-3.3.

But this second solution wont solve gcc-3.3 parser problems.

Just my opinion :-)
