What is listed under Writer- >Menubar->Tools->Custmize...>Keyboard->Shortcut Keys->Escape? It should be Cancel. Also do you use a standard keyboard or some multimedia keyboard? I doubt this has sth. to do with it but we have to look at all options. It also might be some conflicting user settings.
