In the OOo preferences dialog, section Internet => Proxy, one can choese one
out of three proxy server types :
- none
- system
- manual

"none" means "direct connection to the Internet"
"manual" means "use the values defined below".
"system" means "use Windows or GNOME settings"
(reference :
- the online documentation
- http://specs.openoffice.org/appwide/system_settings/System-Settings.sxw)

For the convenience of users, the "system" choice should mean :
"use Windows, GNOME or KDE settings"
(depending on underlying system).
The specification document (dated 2004) and the online help should be updated
as well.

Perharps some other configuration variables are concerned too. To be
investigated.

Implementation notes :
- the configuration variable concerned by this setting is "ooInetProxyType"
- the GNOME code is in shell/source/backends/gconfbe/gconfinetlayer.hxx
