Yes, it shows sign of both modes because you switched quick editing on (options
toolbar) and used SHIFT for selecting.
If the first object would be deselected in your action you could say: hey, why
is it deselected? I pressed SHIFT.
If you wouldn't get into text edit mode of the second object you could say: I'm
in quick editing mode, it should switch to it.
This would be really confusing.
