2006 -------
After entering some text on a very simple document (no tables, graphics, etc) I
left the computer for some time. When I came back and touched a key to resume
typing, Writer vanished.

It happened again some days later - the documents were different, but the only
commonality was that I left it alone for a while. This time, I believe I
clicked to move the cursor in Writer, and it vanished. Recovery did not
retrieve my work. I am unfortunately back to using Word now; I can't afford
random crashes even for a free product.

Another useful datum might be that I am saving in .doc format by default even
from OOo. I hope you can find the issue.

I have seen similar symptoms reported on the Red Hat Bugzilla tracker.
