SBA-nemeth: Concerning hyphenation problems, see also issue 54922. 
As msandersen wrote, 
 - The paragraph format setting (tab "text flow") of characters at start or end
are disregarded entirely.
 - Instead, the "characters at start/end" setting is taken from tools-options.
But those settings should only apply when a manual hyphenation (with or without
inquiry dialog to confirm suggestion) is made.
