When defining special targets for the inference rules and the AUGMAKE special target handling is enabled then the special target .X is equivalent to the %-rule "% : %.X". dmake should handle .<suffix> (not .<suffix1>.<suffix2>) targets only if the AUGMAKE macro is set to 'yes' (or -A is set).
