I think, it's an save-export issue or both. I have more information to add:

* a xls spreadsheet, initially (the first time) saved with Microsoft Excel XP
opens fine with both OOo Calc 2.0.3 (final) and Excel. I can later resave it
with either Excel or OOo Calc as many times as I want in no particular order,
column widths stay the same in both applications.

* a xls spreadsheets, initially (the first time) saved with OOo Calc 2.0.3,
opens with different column widths in Microsoft Excel. I can later resave it
with either Excel or OOo Calc as many times as I want in no particular order,
but column widths STAY different (even after resave with Microsoft Excel XP)
in both applications.

I guess, this shows that OOo Calc initially gets some kind of 'metrics'
setting in the xls file wrong, which Excel (at least XP) does not care about,
but does not overwrite with the correct one either.

Tested with OOo Calc 2.0.3-1 from debian and MS Excel XP on Windows XP/2003. I
don't think this bug is OS specific.
