At some point OOo (2?) gained support for the Unicode space characters of various widths, including zero-width. Unfortunately, the zero-width space character does NOT count as a space, and so the strategy given above does not help. You can achieve nearly the same thing using the "hair space" (U+200A), which is recognized as a word-separator space, and is nearly invisible.
