The problem here is that the background settings operate on either master pages or individual slides: A background change for all slides modifies the master page, a background change for a single slide modified just this slide. So, when the background of a single slide is set to 'NONE' then the background description for this slide is reset. As a consequence the background of the slides master page becomes visible. As a workaround there is the 'Slide->Display Background of Master' entry of the context menu of the slide. It allows the user to hide the background of the master page.
