NOTE: I submited this post over in the user support forum under the
title "Labels don't print 'correctly' in Writer"

This is related to existing issue #50859 in the "problem database".

I initially tried to create some mailing labels today using Writer (File ->
New -> Labels) like I used to do in Word. Specifically, I'd enter the desired
text, create the sheet of labels (8160-type: return labels, 1"x2.53",
30/sheet), then edit the text. My usual method for CENTERING the text on the
label is simply put a blank line before the first line of text like this (dots
merely to show indenting):

-------------------------------------- Top edge of labels
|
| ...........text line 1
| ...........text line 2
|
-------------------------------------- Bottom edge of labels

When I printed the labels, I got an EXTRA 1/2" OF TOP MARGIN in the final print
(for the 8160 labels).

After a few frustrating attempts, I finally discovered that Writer, "bless its'
little binary heart," auto-centers the label text inside the label when it
prints. MSword doesn't do this - I can manually "format" the text position in
the label and Word will dutifilly copy what I created.

I guess to summarize: if one wants to create labels, make sure the FIRST LINE
of text is aligned at the top of the label as Writer initally creates the label
sheet, like this:

-------------------------------------- Top edge of labels
| text line 1
| text line 2
| text line 3
| (etc.)
-------------------------------------- Bottom edge of labels

You can then CENTER each line if desired, but DO NOT put "whitespace" at the
top of the label to "center" your text in the label itself!

Now then, for the "problem": NOWHERE in the OOo help (in-program or external
documentation that I could find) does it mention this fact regarding how Writer
will "auto-center" label text in the label when it prints (or .PDF exports)! I
think this shortcoming should be brought to the OOo "Help Documentation
Department" so they can add this to the "label help" information in the next
OOo release. If desired, I can supply some sample label files and the .PDFs
Writer that generated from them for your perusal (just need a little guidance
on how/where to send attachments).

Now then, if I'm mistaken in my assertion, please correct me and point me to
the right place, etc.
