Add a single symbol with a different than the default font to that footnote (I usually use a bold dark square from the Marlett Font to mark unfinished points in my texts - inserted by a macro, but this does not make a difference here). Save the document, close it, reopen it. The footnote number now has the font of the symbol instead of the footnote number default font. With Marlett it isn't even a number.
