Sheesh ... the actual reason is that each transparency group XObject has a
reference to its Resources dictionary. The problem for acroread 5 is that OOo
only uses one resources dict in the whole file, so the resource dict object
references on the page and the transparency groups were identical ... which
triggered an endless loop in acroread. The solution is to remove the Resources
entry on the transparency group XObjects which makes them use the resources of
the page implicitly.
