I would consider reopening this ancient issue.

I don't know if the technical reason stated above still applies, and I find it
rather confusing that users CAN actually save a file as a .dot template by
saving it as "Microsoft Word (.DOC)", disabling the automatic extension and
expliciting .dot in the name.

Since users are allowed to open .dot files, they should be allowed to save them
without forced conversions or annoying workarounds.
