It is important to have because in some usage scenarios data in spreadsheet is expected to be not spelled correctly (like client names, product codes, addresses). Enabled autospellcheck not only fills the screen with distracting red underlines, but also causes problem with right-clicking the cell (see http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi? id=68715). At the same time user wants to have automatic spellcheck enabled for texts in Writer.
