As far as I can tell, this issue is not about "compatibility."  I have an HP
ScanJet 4470c and can use its OCR and raster image scanning fine with OOo.  With
OCR, the HP software creates an .rtf file which I later open in OOo. 

The actual issue is "integration": whether the HP scanning software will send
the results of the scan directly to OOo rather than to an intermediate file
which requires an extra manual step to open.
