Create a new table, 2x2. The table occupies the entire page width.
Select the whole table.
Select Format/Table.
Select the Columns tab.
"Adapt table width" is grayed out.
"Adjust columns proportionally" is grayed out.
  "Remaining space" is unalterable.

It's really difficult to change the table width.

If I reduce the width of column 1, then hit tab, Column 2's width is increased
by the amount that column 1's width was decreased.
There isn't any easy way to change all the column widths, and have the table
width change!
If I exit the Table Format, then select Table/Autofit/... "Optimal Column Width"
is grayed out. Only after I enter something in one of the table cells does
"Optimal Column Width" become accessible.

I want to make all the column widths .5 inches.
I have to:
Put something into the table.
Select the whole table.
Then select Table/Autofit/Optimal_Column_Width, then
"Adapt table width" is now accessible.
"Adjust columns proportionally" is now accessibl.
  "Remaining space" is unalterable.

Please make it so I can change column widths even if there's nothing in the
table!
