Center cells across acros selection is really better than merging cells. As already said by many user in this issue... merging cell add complexity to the spreadsheet ( especially if you want to move, add or delete row, cols or cells)... Beyond Excel compatibiliy ... this fonctionnality will really add more usability to OOo.
