This used to work with OOo versions earlier than 2.0. This is still true with version 2.0.4. I'm glad this bug report exists, and mentions the "Tools -> Update -> All charts" command. Until I found this report, I couldn't figure out any way to update charts in Writer. This is really an interface usability bug!
