I don't think it's the purpose of the help what IS and when to use a variable. -> the help says: "Variable fields let you add dynamic content to your document. For example, you can use a variable to reset the page numbering." What types? As described in the help: text or number. The rest is pure formatting stuff (date, currency...). The domain of the dat? What do you mean? Variables are attached to the document. -> the help says: "User-defined fields are only available in the current document."
