I am currently most familiar with Mac OS X, but have also used Windows and Linux. As previous comments have stated 12 well-combining colors is quite much, although probably not impossible. Apple's iWork suite uses only 6 default colors (7th uses the 1st color etc), see attachment above. I would vote for using the Tango palette directly and then refining the 2D and 3D views of the charts to make those colors look good. Especially the 3D -view seems to need overall increase in luminance.
