The choice of the letter 'A' to show the effect of the formatting style under
the formatting buttons is a poor one. This is because it is a challenge to
distinguish an italicized one from a normal one due to the fact that the letter
already has a sloping side to it, just increasing that angle to show italics
isn't enough.  If you use a letter with a left-most straight edge, i.e. 'B', or
'I', the difference will be more apparent and easier for the user to 
distinguish.

Perhaps the letter choice was a way to differentiate OOo from the MS-Word or
deal with internationalization issues but whatever the motivation the current
solution is suboptimal and needs to be addressed.
