I think the reason Excel and Calc treat empty cells as a "1" for the purposes of
this function is that then it is possible to multiple an entire line of cells
(eg =product(A1;B1;C1;E1) or =product(A1:G1) and not need to explicitly enter a
"1" in all cells that you don't want to affect the calculation. Excel ignores
empty cells.

>From the Excel help for PRODUCT: "If an argument is an array or reference, only
numbers in the array or reference are counted. Empty cells, logical values,
text, or error values in the array or reference are ignored." I think "ignored"
is the keyword, although I noticed that having all cells blank produces "0" in
both Excel and Calc... go figure.

Reclosing as WONTFIX and adding ms_interoperability as a keyword because this is
an Excel compatibility issue. (If OOo did it differently, then it could break
spreadsheets imported from Excel.)
