Operating under Windows XP SP2 OpenOffice 2.1 is configured with 'System' as the
selected proxy configuration option. Connecting through Fedora 2 proxy with
Squid Cache enabled.

Initially 'Check for Updates Automatically' prompts for user proxy credentials
and the operator enters credentials selecting to have the credentials remembered
using the available check box. OOo completes the checks and reports itself as
being up to date.

On a subsequent manual or automatic update check OOo again prompts for user
credentials with the user and password field blank but the 'Remember' check box
pre-selected. If the user proceeds deliberately or accidentally without
re-entering the credentials then.

Some period later after a restart with Quickstarter loaded, OpenOffice Update
floods the proxy server with connections using invalid or missing credentials.
Linux Proxy reports IP_ConnTrack Dropped Packets, Squid reports thousands of
failed connections to the OpenOffice Update URL over a short period. "Check for
Updates Automatically" does not re-prompt for credentials or report a connection
failure. This behaviour persists until the problem resolved in the short term by
either;
Closing Quickstarter which ends connection attempts.
Forcing a manual check entering corrected credentials when prompted.
or
Bypassing the proxy for 'openoffice.org'.

A subsequent manual update and OpenOffice prompts again for the proxy
credentials with the user and password fields blank but the 'Remember' check box
still pre-selected. Credentials can be entered but again will not be
'Remembered'.
