2007 -------
I was able to successfully replicate the problem using the files you provided on
my Windows XP SP2 machine. I have Open Office 2.1 and MS Office 2007 installed.

However here are a few points that I found interesting while I was doing the
testing. I won't call them a way around since the result is not the same on all
files

1. Open table1.rtf in both MS Word and OpenOffice and notice the difference in
the formatting of the cells in the 2nd and 3rd rows of the last column. Also
notice the size of the file (it should be around 15 KB).

2. Now open the file in MS Word. Go to the cells whose formatting was disturbed.
Change their alignment from Center to left and then to center back again. Save
it now.

3. Open this file in OpenOffice. It should appear fine now. Now notice the size
of the file (it should be around 40KB now. about 2.5 times the size of the
original one).

The reason why I won't call this a way around is that doing the same procedure
on different rtf files yields different results e.g. with table2.rtf doing the
samething makes the left column appear left indented instead of center in
openoffice.

Even the highlighting done cells in MS Word doesn't appear in OpenOffice.
However Bold, Italic and Underlining do

I am attaching the copy of table1.rtf with steps 1 - 3 done. It has some text
highlighting done and the fonts are set to bold.
