Most western and central European languages use diacritics and/or letters which
not only are not found on an ASCII keyboard, but which differ from each other
sufficiently so that even better equipped keyboards, like those with a variant
of Scandinavian orthography, which I use, lack access to many necessary symbols.
Try writing, for example, the name of the eminent Czech sinologist, Jaroslav
Průšek, whose centenary we celebrated last year, without resorting to time
consuming work-arounds ! The ability to change keyboard settings directly from
the keyboard, as can be done in Word, would be a great help to many of us, and
flatten the learning curve for new users....
