Fine, exactly that was my proposal! Store the position "as usual" (means: e.g.
as "relative to bottom") so that you don't need to parse and calculate the
formula to position it (e.g. by using the provided replacement image) correctly.
Additionally have a "flag" that tells the application to recalculate this
position base on baseline alignment in case the formula is changed again.
In all cases where the formula is not changed afterwards you can safely ignore
the flag completely.

What is not very popular in the TC is to create a new alignment attribute and
store only this one in the file format. I also disliked that idea for
compatibility reasons but as some people asked for it we brought it to the TC.

So as several people like you and cdeval had the same idea now or at least
agreed to it I'm confident that moving forward with it is the right choice. The
"flag" could be even declared as "application specific", means: it is not
necessary to change ODF for it. ODF allows for application specific extensions
and as this flag is not necessary to load and display the document correctly I
think it is OK to ignore it. So I will suggest it to the TC and in case it won't
be accepted make it an application specific attribute for OOo.

I think you misunderstood the proposal and for me it seems that we have the same
understanding. I hope that I could make this clear.
