The information given let's me guess that the files you've saved with your Excel version is HTML text. To confirm, please attach such a document. If you can't, start the Office and choose the document in the file open dialog and set the Filter type to HTML Document (OpenOffice.org) Calc. Now press Enter and tell us the result, is the document opened in Calc now?
