------- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thu Mar 29 19:16:36 +0000 2007 ------- I have two sheets which I wish to merge. I select all cells in the first one by clicking on the box in the upper-left-hand corner, between the row labels and column labels. I hit Ctrl-c. Then I select a cell in the second sheet and hit Ctrl-v. I get the error: "There is not enough space on the sheet to insert here." This does not make sense; there are only a few rows and columns in the first sheet. If I explicitly select the rows and columns I need (all of those that actually have data, not including the seemingly infinite number of empty cells) by dragging from one corner of the data to its diagonal opposite, I can cut-and-paste without any problem. This has already been reported as Issue 74545, but I wish to reopen this as a usability bug. I understand the technical reason why this fails, but this is not very user-friendly behavior. The system is treating cells which a person intuitively things do not exist, as if they do exist (because technically, they do). The fact that Excel does the same thing does not make it any more usable. There are several possible solutions which have been suggested so far: - Make this Just Work by ignoring cells on the fringes which do not have content. There is the question of whether or not the empty cells should overwrite content in the destination sheet if it is larger, but this is not a fatal impediment. - Caolan McNamara at Red Hat suggested only selecting cells with content when the select button is pressed in the first place. - Make the error message more friendly. "There is not enough space on the sheet to insert here." does not make sense if you think you've just selected only four cells, and it does not give the user a good idea of how to work around the problem. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker.
