My unabridged English (American) dictionary lists "gage" as an alternate spelling, and even as an alternate it says "chiefly for technical usage". You could also look up "gage" and "gauge" on Wikipedia, for instance, or dictionary.com. Also, please note that in my original message, I pointed out that I had read Issue 43600.
