Be that as it may.
First a little bit of history - the way I remember it.
The extremely useful feature for any serious document editing, the quick
Format/Style-Copy ("Painter"), appeared in MS Word 97, long BEFORE Simonyi left
MS and then early last year in the official OOo-2.0 ("Paintbrush") - long AFTER
he left :).
There are at least two FRIGHTENING things here:
1. The move from "DEFECT" to "ENHANCEMENT" of the Paintbrush behavior (and
possibly scrolling in general), still so mickeymousish after 10 years of
extensive use, points to the still amateurish nature of the design, planning and
implementation of a word processor intended to compete with (and replace!) the
big boys.
2. The fact that in the past year (maybe two, if you count the RCs) NOBODY ELSE
has ever complained about this (let alone the developers to have done anything
about it up to this brand new version, 2.TWO).
That should give one pause when thinking about the general kind of user OOo may
be appealing to.
Obviously this will be blamed on (and "painted" aside as) my being picayunish
and focusing on such a minor "issue" in a great product with a ton of otherwise
great and innovative features.
OTOH, come to think about it, don't blame anyone else when one day you realize
that you Never Got A Dinner (at least not on a menu chosen by Martha Stewart)!
