Your third step is wrong. Just put the cell cursor in the header row and do *not* select (highlight) this row. If you highlight the row and apply an autofilter, you've defined an automatic databaserange (which is needed for the filter to work properly) of exactly one row. So all your data isn't in this range and therefore can't be filtered. If you need just a few columns to be filtered, select these columns and *all* rows which contain data to be filtered. Now apply the autofilter and it will work.
