When I rebooted (several times, as it would only boot to a black screen), I noticed the OS was giving me an error with libcap.so.1 (it said it couldn't be found). So, I found it was a symbolic link, and the reference was incorrect. I fixed the link and Open Office seems to work perfectly now. Thanks a lot for your help. It was scary not having a word processing program.
