That is interesting. How do I tell whether a package is a "meta-package"
or contains actual data?

Which packages does synaptic want to remove? AFAIK a lot of them are so called
meta packages (e.g. ubuntu-desktop) which don't contain rel files/prgrams but a
list of other packages, they "include"...
