Sorry for the bad user experience you had. I agree that this shouldn't happen
abnd we should try to fix that soon. It could help us fixing the problem if you
could answer some questions:

As I understand you have opened your document in OOo on Windows and then have
shut down Windows. I would like to know something about the things you did in
between (after loading the document and before shutting down Windows):

- Did you make any changes to your document so that it was modified when Windows
was shut down?
- Did you at least once save your document in this session, either to its
original or another location?
- Did you have a crash of OOo while working on the document, including file
recovery?

When you have shut down Windows, did you get a message box from OOo telling that
e.g. there was a modified file that needed to be changed? And did you OOo tell
to save the file? In case yes, do you have an estimation about how long it took
you to recognize the message box and answer it?

And BTW: did you have the OOo "Quickstarter" running in the systray?

Did you try to start OOo on Windows later? And did it offer you to recover a
file?

The emtpy file you got on Linux - can you attach it to this issue? Or is it a
zero byte file?

Sorry for all these questions but there are so many things to investigate that
some more information is necessary. A scenario I could imagine is that the
windows shutdown killed OOo (as it does with all applications after some time)
and OOo was not fast enough to save your document before that, though I still
wonder how an empty file can occur.
