UX point of view:

"Berkeley" normally refers to the usability study "A Usability Comparision of
Sun StarOffice Writer 5.2 vs. Microsoft Word 2000.", conducted by U of Berkeley
in 2001.

However, the issue of field shadings is not mentioned there. 
However - yes, another however - I support the request to turn field shadings
off by default. And I also like the idea to give special mouse-over highlighting
for fields if they are not indicated otherwise.

The first part seems easy.
The second (mouse over stuff) requires a bit more coding, I suppose. 
Frank, what's your opinion? It is not standard, but hey- who cares if it
improves usability?
