We use an ODBC API call (SQLTables) to retrieve the tables list (this is what the statement tries to do). So this sounds as if the ODBC driver is flawed, which might be triggered by some parameter we pass to it (which would explain why it doesn't happen with other applications). Could you switch on logging in the ODBC driver (in the Control Panel), and attach the log (zipped) to this issue? This would perhaps allow to determine in which context the call is made, which would allow us an educated guess where the problem lies.
