More information:
I downloaded from the OSUOSL mirror
OOo_2.2.1_LinuxIntel_install_wJRE_en-US.tar.gz/, untarred, cd'ed to the
RPMs directory, added it to YAST and installed in YAST.
I opened a new text document, did a little stuff in it, and hit Ctrl-s.
ps aux gives

It almost has to be either something else I have installed or something in
one of the SuSE patches, or you'd have been inundated with reports.

Do you use a genuine OOo install file or a distribution build?
Does this only happen in Writer or in other OOo apps?
