A) Leaving whitespaces behind makes the XHTML document smaller. I thought of
that as well. I think if anybody like to work on the source, he might use an
editor with auto indent as well.

B) It still makes the XHTML harder to post-process.
I am not sure what you mean with this, as in both cases it is XML. But I am
already convinced of removing the indent anyway.

C) > Am I to understand that this merely reflecting the state of the innards of
the OASIS file?
More or less, as the filter is still working on the OpenOffice.org XML not the
OASIS Open Document XML.
>But how did it get that way in the first place?
Please subscribe to dev@xml.openoffice.org there is a lot of useful information.
I recently answered your questions in

Certainly it
would be best all-round to catch these cases, as soon as they come into
existence? Though it cost a little during the editing, yet it would save disk
space for the file, save processing every time the file is read back in -- heck,
every time the user scrolls the screen or prints or does just about anything.

Not sure if I understand completly what you want, but if you explicitly do
something in the office, it will be in general reflected in the xml. Even it is
not optimal, the user is the boss.

Nevertheless the issue is the wrong place to start a discussion, but the
mailinglist mentioned above is.

Thanks again for your help.
