BTW, did you check the file by actually running the attached Java file Issue71322.java? In both Excel and OOo, I found it difficult to distinguish blank or nonexistent fields from fields with zero-length strings by simply viewing the spreadsheet. The only way how I could find a difference was programmatically (and that's how this problem surfaced initially). If you have a chance to run Issue71322.java please do so and double-check for yourself. I'll let you know what my findings with OOo 2.2.1 are as soon as I get to it. Thanks!
