I installed the Flat XML filter JAR from the above post, and tried to open a
pre-existing flat ODT I have, but no success. I'm using ooo-build 2.2.1 with
native KDE file picker.
First I just tried to open the file but, to no real surprise, OOo just opened it
as plain text.
Then I tried to select the filter in the open dialogue, but then OOo wouldn't
find my file. I soon figured out that the filter invented the file ending
".fodt" and mime type "application/x-vnd.oasis.openoffice.text" instead of using
the standard compliant ".xml" and "text/xml" (it's just "shuld", not "must", but
*I* still think you *should* follow the ODF spec, even where you don't "must").
After fixing these issues in "Tools" - "XML Filter Settings" the open dialogue
found the file with the "Flat ODF Text" filter selected, but when I opened it,
it would still only open as plain text, so still no joy. No idea where to go
from here to get it to work for me.

The above is a bug report on the flat XML filter JAR, but here follows a feature
request. I have no clue on how feasible is to implement this, but it seems the
"natural" way for the filter to behave to me:
What about a single import filter that uses office:mimetype to determine what
(sub)application to open, register this filter with "*.xml" and "text/xml", and
become the default behaviour for those files, with "Microsoft Word 2003 XML
(*.xml)", "Microsoft Excel 2003 XML (*.xml)" and "Text (*.txt)" as backups, in
case it isn't really a flat ODT file.
