I un-installed/removed OpenOffice 2.2.1 completely (including deleting
directories with pieces left behind after the removal process) and then cleaned
the registry with several registry cleaners.
I did a clean install of OpenOffice 2.2.1, and it appears to be working OK. The
hot links in the spreadsheet did in fact bring up the URL in Firefox, not
OpenOffice Writer/Web.
Something within OpenOffice had become fouled up. I have no idea what it was,
but a complete removal, registry scrubbing, and then a clean install solved the
problem.
I think we should just leave the underlying cause a mystery unless it recurs.
