Yes aging is additive, same as smoothing and sharpening.
Filters are total different from the settings in the "color" sub-toolbar. The
latter settings are stored as settings in the content.xml. But filters are
applied directly to the pixels. That's the reason, why they are not persistent
for linked pictures.
"I don't understand why old pictures become red, but that's not the point." That
is not the only thing, which was transfered wrongly from SO5.2
