Edit - Replace does not replace straight quotes with custom quotes even when
everything is enabled for it to do so.

The procedure I followed is:

1. Tools - AutoCorrect/AutoFormat - Custom Quotes : checked boxes and confirmed
that custom quotes were selected.

2. Tools - AutoCorrect/AutoFormat - Options : checked âReplace standard quotes
with custom quotes.â (All other boxes were unchecked.) This box is in the
âMâ
column which suggests that it will be applied while modifying existing text.
There is no corresponding box in the âTâ column which suggests that custom
quotes cannot be applied while typing.

3. Format - AutoFormat - While Typing : selected this. The program started to
use custom quotes as I typed, which was unexpected, because the box checked in
step 2 was not in the âTâ column.

4. Format - AutoFormat - Apply : I selected this and as expected, the program
ran through its replacement routine for the whole document, but straight quotes
were not changed to custom quotes.

The language in the AutoCorrect/AutoFormat dialog corresponded to the language
of the document.

This issue has been raised previously (12600, 40952) and dismissed with
âinvalidâ or âworks for me.â But a lot of people seem to be having
trouble with
this issue. Of course, the same goal can be accomplished by searching and
replacing on regular expressions, but the program tells the user it can do this
automatically, it seems like it should be able to do so easily, so a fix would
be greatly appreciated.

Or perhaps the âReplace standard quotes with custom quotesâ was simply put
in
the âMâ column instead of the âTâ column by mistake?
