I believe that the version of OpenOffice in question in all cases was supplied by the vendor (Fedora). Eventually I switched to 2.2.1 downloaded directly from the the OpenOffice site due to issues with OpenOffice Base. I can't recall it crashing since then. I do know that Fedora does patch OO to standardize the file save dialogs and maybe a few other things.
