It surely is possible to run Linux/MIPS on QEMU, that's what I've been doing since before I had a Loongson 2E system. Look here for directions on how to install Debian GNU/Linux MIPS(EL) on QEMU: http://www.aurel32.net/info/debian_mips_qemu.php. You can also install using the QEMU MIPS Malta emulation but I've had a few problems with that.
